Kiran Bedi stresses on e-learning in police training

Puducherry Lt. Governor Kiran Bedi on Thursday stressed the need to adopt e-learning techniques for training police officers to "cut cost, time and distance".

"E-learning cuts the cost, time and distance. It is an integral part of digital India initiative of the central government. The trainer should put in complete effort to teach the trainees, because the outcome of the training depends on the way the trainer is," Bedi said while addressing the 35th National Symposium of Heads of Police Training Institutions.

The two-day event is being organised by the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The former IPS officer also said that the BPR&D and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy should meet regularly to share the best practices in training as both the institutions are the hubs of training for the police officers.

"These hubs should also be the source of content or material for e-learning," she said.

Bedi also mooted collaboration between IITs, IIMs and other management institutions for collaborative research on training and good training practices.

Expressing her agreement with Bedi, Director General BPR&D M.C. Borwankar said e-learning can also act as one of the important tools to bridge the basic training gap of police officials.

"BPR&D is collaborating with institutions of excellence like IITs and IIMs for the development of leadership qualities of police officers. There is a huge gap in basic training of police officials and to bridge this gap, e-learning can act as one of the important tools."

She said the resolutions passed during these national symposiums are taken over by the five Central Detective Training Schools (CDTS) at Chandigarh, Jaipur, Ghaziabad, Kolkata and Hyderabad, which collaborate and work with BPR&D.

Senior officers from the Home Ministry, representatives from state government and Union Territories, IITs, IIMs and National Law Universities were also present on the occasion.
