A 24-year-old man has been arrested for molesting and attempting to rape and murder his elder brother's wife here, police said on Tuesday.
Police said the accused has been identified as Arvind Kumar. He had been molesting and trying to force himself on his elder brother's wife, 30, for the last two weeks whenever he found her alone at home.
"Kumar was arrested on Sunday soon after from the victim's residence after the locals told police about the stabbing of woman by her brother-in-law," Deputy Commissioner of Police Milind Mahadeo Dumbere told IANS.
The incident took place on Sunday morning when the accused, after finding the victim alone in her residence barged into her rented flat in Bharat Nagar area.
"He began to force himself on her. When she resisted and threatened him to disclose his acts to her husband, he got infuriated he stabbed her," Dumbere said.
"He then threw her from the balcony of the second floor to kill her but the woman held on to a iron rod of a cooler installed at the first floor and cried for help following which some of her neighbours pulled her inside from a window," the police officer added.
"After the victim narrated the entire episode, the angry locals thrashed Kumar badly and handed him over to police," he added.
"The woman said in her statement that Kumar used to molest her whenever he found her alone after her husband left for job. On Saturday when her husband went out of the town, Kumar tried to rape her. She later narrated the entire incident to her husband over phone following which her husband rebuked his younger brother," the officer added.
The woman has been admitted to a nearby hospital where she is undergoing treatment but her condition is said to be out of danger, the officer said.
"Both accused and the woman's husband work in a factory," he said.
