Criticising the ruling Samajwadi Party for violence in Mathura, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Friday sought resignation of the state's Akhilesh Yadav government, and demanded a "time-bound judicial probe" into the matter.
The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister said the violent incident in the "religious city" of Mathura was "extremely sad and worrying".
"Wrong policies and lawlessness of the Samajwadi Party government is responsible for such a shameful incident. Taking moral responsibility of the incident, the government should resign immediately," Mayawati said in a party statement.
"In order to reach to the bottom of the incident and bring the truth out, there should be a time-bound judicial inquiry into the matter. It is a very serious matter and a commissioner level probe will only be considered as a formality," Mayawati added.
She accused the Samajwadi Party government of patronising goons in the state.
"Illegal encroachment at Jawaharbagh proves that the encroachers had been given high level government patronage and it is an example of Jungle Raj (misgovernance) in the state. This a matter of detailed probe," she said.
The toll in the Mathura violence stood at 24 on Friday.
At least 250 people have been detained for their involvement in the clash.
