Kanwar Brijesh Singh, the newly appointed director general of police (DGP) in Odisha, on Sunday said he was committed to bridging "the gap between police and the common man".

The Odisha government on Saturday appointed Singh, a 1985 batch officer, who was working as the director of state vigilance department, as the new DGP.

"My first priority would be to bridge the gap between police and the common man. The police would be made more responsible in the coming days," Singh told IANS.

He said the Left wing extremism activities are under control in the state.

"We would certainly try to curb the Maoist activities in the state and try to bring our people, who have been misguided, to the mainstream. Besides, more developmental activities would be carried out in the Maoist affected areas," he said.

As the government appointed the new DGP on Saturday night, the incumbent DGP Sanjeev Marik went on leave before his retirement due in December 31, official sources said.
