Stephen Keshi has reportedly resigned as coach of Nigeria after the team's elimination from the World Cup Monday.

The former Super Eagles international defender is said to have made the decision following the team's 0-2 loss to France in their Round-of-16 match at the Mane Garrincha national stadium, reports CMC.

"I have to go back to my family and face fresh challenges," Keshi told the media.

Keshi took charge of Nigeria in 2011 and guided the team to victory at the Africa Cup of Nations last year.

He is one of only two people, along with Egypt's Mahmoud El-Gohary, to win the Africa Cup of Nations as a player and coach.

The 52-year-old, who won 64 caps for Nigeria from 1981-95, was part of the 1994 team that won African football's top prize in Tunisia.

The news came along with captain Joseph Yobo announcing retirement after 100 international matches.
