Normalcy returns to Assam-Nagaland border

The troubled Assam-Nagaland border is limping back to normal following an attack by Naga militants that led to the death of nine people and the displacement of over 10,000 since Aug 12.

The Golaghat district administration in Assam Tuesday lifted the curfew as there has not been any fresh incident of violence since Aug 20, officials said.

The state government said in a statement that 4,742 people, who were living in relief camps, have returned to their homes after the government boosted security arrangements for them.

"The Assam government has set up 27 fixed pickets to be manned by four companies of the CRPF and five companies of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB)," the statement said.

The government has also deployed three companies of Assam Police to build confidence among the people who are still living in the relief camps.

The government Tuesday distributed the ex-gratia amount to the kin of the victims, the statement added.
