Amid incessant rainfall in the city for the last few days, an old two-storeyed building partially collapsed in central Kolkata's Taltala on Tuesday, the city Fire Department said.
"A part of an old building at 10-B Indian Mirror Street collapsed on Tuesday afternoon. Some inhabitants of the house are feared trapped under the debris," a fire brigade official said.
Fire Department officials, local police and a disaster management team have rushed to the spot to initiate the rescue operation.
According to fire officials, the part of the building that collapsed was inhabited by a number of people.
City Mayor Sovan Chatterjee also reached the spot to inspect the situation.
"The rescue operation is on. However, how many people are trapped in the wreckage is still not certain," an officer from Taltala Police Station said.
