Politicians took to Twitter to condemn the terror attack in Punjab's Gurdaspur district on Monday, expressing their sympathies for the victims and their families.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh tweeted that he spoke to Director General, Border Security Force, Devendra Kumar Pathak, and vigil has been stepped up along the India-Pakistan border.

Stating that the ministry of home affairs (MHA) was monitoring the situation in Gurdaspur in Punjab, he said he was confident that "the situation will be soon brought in control".

Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah, who was among the first to tweet, said: "Will be very interested to see what emerges about the identity of the terrorists involved in the Gurdaspur attack this morning. The timing of the attack, methodology & location are all eerily similar to attacks in the border belt of Jammu."

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi condemned the attack while saying his prayers were with the families of the victims.

"Strongly condemn the terror attack in Gurdaspur. I hope the situation is brought under control at the earliest. My prayers are with the families of those who lost their lives in the attack."

Aam Aadmi Party's Punjab leader Sucha Singh Chotepur tweeted: "Terrorist attack in Dinanagar Town of Gurdaspur Distt of Punjab, a very sad moment nd a failure of Security agencies."

Former Congress parliamentarian Manish Tewari, whose father late V.N. Tiwari was among the first to be assassinated by militants at the onset of the Punjab militancy in the 1980s, wrote: "Terrorist attack on Police station in Dina Nagar Gurdaspur Hope not the start of something ominous Pak trying to spread proxy war beyond J&K."

Condemning the attack, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted: "We strongly condemn cowardly attack on innocent ppl in Punjab. We are with the people of Punjab and hope that culprits wud soon be nabbed."
