A peaceful protest was organised in Australia Friday to show solidarity with the people of Ferguson, Missouri in the US.

The protest against police violence in the US forced St. Kilda Road in Melbourne to be temporarily closed, The Age reported.

A group of about 100 people picketed the US consulate to show solidarity with the people of Ferguson.

Ferguson has been the scene of violent protests after a grand jury there decided last week not to indict a white police officer who shot black and unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown.

Some protesters held placards reading "I can't breathe", a reference to Eric Garner, who died after being placed in a chokehold by a New York police officer while being arrested on suspicion of selling untaxed cigarettes.
