Cynicism among people towards political leaders is a dangerous trend and there is a need to remove voters' apathy towards elections, former chief election commissioner S.Y. Quraishi said here Thursday.
He said: "People losing faith in democracy is dangerous for any democracy. If we want to strengthen democracy, there is a need to remove apathy among voters."
"People in the country have formed an image about politicians that they are corrupt and hence they do not go to vote. To remove the corrupt, you will have to vote," he added.
He was speaking at the launch of www.janpratinidhi.com, a web portal for connecting voters with their political representative and designed by a non-governmental organisation.
Quraishi stressed that the role of money power is needed to be contained in the 2014 general elections.
