Rosberg pips Hamilton to win Mexico GP

With Formula One making a much anticipated return to Mexico after a 23-year absence, the crowd cheered for Nico Rosberg as the German claimed the win.

Rosberg beat out his Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton into second place on Sunday, with Williams-Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas finishing in third, reports Xinhua.

While Rosberg seemed elated with this win, it is unlikely that Hamilton will begrudge it to him since the British driver had the Drivers' Championship sewn up with three races to go after winning the United States Grand Prix on October 25.

The tricky conditions at the Hermanos Rodriguez track also saw both Ferrari cars not finish a race since the Australian GP in 2006. Sebastian Vettel suffered a puncture early in the race and trailed in last place before a quick repair allowed him to surge back into fourth. However, a crash in lap 53 forced him out for good.

Ferrari's other driver and former champion Kimi Raikkonen, was also made to quit after he was crashed into Bottas.

With a 100,000 sell-out crowd present throughout the weekend, drivers sang the praises of the revamped track that convinced the Formula 1 governing body to return to Mexico.

Speaking to the press on Sunday, Rosberg stated that "it is great to learn a new track. They have done a good job".
