Goan football club Salgaocar gave themselves a huge boost as they clinched a huge 5-1 victory over Bharat FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Sunday.
With the win Salgaocar reached sixth spot with 21 points from 19 games, having won six and lost 10 while Bharat FC are a placed at the bottom of the standings with just 18 points from 19 games, with four wins and nine losses.
Daryl Duffy's goals in either half (3rd minute, 49th) were complemented by Bikash Jairu (8th) and a Douhou Pierre brace (59th, 84th) while Kris Bright scored a consolation goal for Bharat FC (63rd).
Derrick Pereira's men got off to a great start in the third minute itself as Duffy made the most of Omar Jarun's indecisiveness. He latched on to Zakeer Mundampara's pass and smashed it easily past Shahinlal Meloly in the goal, who had no chance to stop the ball.
Five minutes later Jairu doubled the lead.
In the 49th minute, Duffy combined with Mundampara yet again to score Salgaocar's third.
A minute before the hour mark, Jarun's nightmare did not seem to end as Douhou effortlessly brought down a long ball, before shrugging off Jarun's weak challenge to make it 4-0.
Bharat FC had a consolation goal back in the 63rd minute after the referee awarded a penalty for an Augustin Fernandes hand ball. Bright stepped up and made no mistake.
Douhou, from a corner by Mundampara, completed his own brace after his drive from range came off the underside of the crossbar before ending up behind Meloly in goal.
