Shell opens global IT centre in Bengaluru

Global energy major Royal Dutch Shell plc has opened its global information technology (IT) centre in this tech hub for developing and delivering IT projects in-house.

"The in-house global IT centre will provide jobs for thousands of techies by 2020, as we invest in the centre to be an integral part of our global IT project delivery and support network," Shell India's chairman Yasmine Hilton said here Friday.

The Hague-based Anglo-Dutch oil and gas multinational is one of the leading investors in India's energy sector among global integrated energy firms.

"We aim to attract the best talent in the industry and provide opportunities for them to build world-class business solutions," Hilton said on the occasion.

Shell has projects and technology centre in the city, employing about 1,000 scientists and engineers as part of its projects & technology business worldwide.

"We have selected Bengaluru because of its competitiveness and availability of a skilled, diverse IT talent pool covering various disciplines," Hilton asserted.

The hitech centre will provide IT services to all of Shell's businesses - upstream, downstream and projects & technology - and associated support functions.

The company decided to set up the centre in India after reviewing its global IT projects and operations support capability for delivering projects in-house.

Employment opportunities at the centre will be posted soon on the company's Indian subsidiary website www.shell.in.

"Bengaluru's IT talent will improve our ability to provide top-quality project delivery and selected operations support the world over," Shell's projects and technology director Harry Brekelmans said in the statement.

The centre will re-locate next year in a 52-acres of dedicate campus near Devanahalli and closer to the international airport.

The company's 2,000-strong back office in Chennai provides business and financial support to its firms worldwide.

Besides a thriving lubricants and retail business and presence in integrated gas through its liquefied natural gas regasification plant and port at Hazira in Gujarat, Shell has an agreement with the Andhra Pradesh Gas Development Corporation, GDF Suez and GAIL (Gas Authority of India) on a floating storage regasification unit project at Kakinada in the neighbouring state's coastal region.
