Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on Wednesday condoled the death of Congress leader and former speaker Balram Jakhar, saying it was an "irreparable loss" for the country.
"I am deeply saddened to learn about Balram Jakhar's demise. The passing away of such a distinguished and soft-spoken leader is an irreparable loss for the nation. He will always be in our midst for his thoughts.
"He used to call me 'Behna' (sister). I recently met him as he had been indisposed for a long time. Such leaders are remembered for their positive qualities. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved members of his family," she said in a statement issued here.
Jakhar, who died in Delhi on Wednesday, served as speaker from 1980 to 1989.
