Former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli, who dramatically lost 20kg after picking up a mystery virus, said on Saturday she is on the way to recovery.

The 2013 champion from France, who has shocked fans with her skeletal appearance, was barred from playing in an invitational event at Wimbledon this week after doctors expressed fears over her health.

Bartoli, 31, earlier told a British television channel ITV that the virus is so rare that medical experts have no name for it. Insisting that she is not anorexic, Bartoli said she can only eat organic salad leaves and cucumber without the skin.

She added that she needs gloves when she uses her mobile phone as the virus has caused severe electro-sensitivity. Bartoli also claimed that she has to wash with mineral water rather than tap water.

Marion tweeted on Saturday stating that she is on her way to recovery and also joked with World No.1 Serena Williams that she is ready to return serves.

"On my way to #recovery #Faith #courage #fight. Be careful @serenawilliams soon I ll return your serve," Marion tweeted.

Critics took to social media in May after Bartoli appeared as a commentator at the French Open with many accusing the former champ of having an eating disorder.
