Two policemen were wounded in an exchange of fire between cops following an altercation here Wednesday night.
Siliguri police commissioner Jagmohan said the incident occurred inside a van when the policemen were conducting a naka checking at Tinpatti Mor under Bhaktinagar police station at 9.30 p.m.
After a heated exchange, constable Tashi Sherpa of the 10th battalion of the state armed police suddenly opened fire inflicting multiple injuries on his colleague Carlos Oraon. The victim sustained injuries in both the hands.
Another policeman then tried to snatch Sherpa's rifle, but during the scuffle Sherpa sustained a bullet injury on his leg.
"Both the injured policemen have been hospitalised. They are now out of danger," said Jagmohan.
A departmental inquiry has been launched into the incident.
There was tension in the area and senior officers have rushed to the spot.
