UNGA should play a greater role: China

China called on the UN General Assembly (UNGA) to play a greater role in shaping the agenda of global development beyond 2015.

Wang Min, China's deputy permanent representative to the UN, made the statement Wednesday as he addressed the 68th session of the UNGA on the theme of "revitalization of the work of our General Assembly".

Wang noted that given the complex global situation, the international community has high hopes for the UN and particularly the UNGA, the world organization's deliberative body, reported Xinhua.

"Member states, especially the developing countries, hope that the UNGA will further strengthen its authority and efficiency, in order to actively respond to the international community's expectations for it and better implement its mandate entrusted in the UN Charter," he said.

The UNGA, Wang said, should focus on discussing and dealing with major issues that are of common concerns of member states, especially those involving the vital interest of the developing countries.

"The UNGA should increase efforts and attention to the development issue, so as to play a greater role in realizing Millennium Development Goals, shaping post-2015 development agenda and promoting sustainable development," Wang said.

The UNGA should strengthen coordination with those and other UN bodies, based on the principle of division of labour, so that each can give full play of its own strength and step up information exchange and interaction, he said.

The Chinese envoy went on to say that his country supports improving the UNGA working methods, simplifying its decision-making procedures and enhancing its efficiency.

"China also supports the strengthening of the UNGA president's office in terms of man power and budget, particularly aimed at resolving actual difficulties faced by the developing countries when carrying out the function of the presidency," Wang said.
