A woman beggar was beaten to death on Saturday and four others were brutally assaulted by villagers in Jharkhand's Sahebganj district on suspicion of being 'choti-katwa' or braid-cutters, police said.

Police said Assistant Sub-Inspector Kapildeo Keshri was injured when a police team went to Radha Nagar to rescue the group as the villagers pelted them with stones.

A child too was thrashed severely by the villagers. The woman was admitted in a hospital where she died.

Police said the villagers were agitated after the braid of a girl was cut.
