This refers to the editorial “Learning to be No. 1” (December 22). In rebuking the country for celebrating Sachin Tendulkar’s 50th test century in the midst of an innings, the editorial overlooks the fact that the defeat was a single event while Tendulkar’s record was not just a “stupendous feat” but a historic moment in the annals of world sports. Coming at the age of 37, it is his seventh test century of this year, which stands out in a career spanning 21 years dotted with frequent injuries and under the burden of tough expectations of the countrymen.
As for the defeat, Sachin would play the role of a mentor and his century would raise the team’s performance.
