CPI(M) questions NDA govt's commitment to implementing PMAY

Party General Secretary Sitaram Yechury said that the government is more into the use of 'jumla'

CPI(M) today questioned the NDA government's commitment to implementing the ambitious Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban), launched last year, saying only 1,623 homes have been built under the housing scheme as against the announced 30 lakh a year.

CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury, in a series of tweets, also suggested that the government is more into use of 'jumla' (catchphrases) than executing the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY).

"Not even a single house has been built under the in-situ redevelopment of slums scheme announced with much hype #JumlaFactCheck (sic)," Yechury tweeted.

In another tweet, Yechury said the government has allotted just Rs 5,000 crore in this fiscal against the required Rs 40,000 crore a year to meet the target of constructing 30 lakh homes every year.

"At Rs 1-1.5 lakh per house, for 30 lakh houses a year, budget needed: Rs 40,000 crore. Provided in FY 16-17: Rs 5000 crore. #Jumlanomics," he said.

The PMAY (Urban) was launched in June last year with the government announcing construction of two crore houses for urban poor by 2022 at a rate of 30 lakh homes per year.
