Congress today said there was "misplaced euphoria" in Modi dispensation over UN General Assembly adopting a negotiating text for Security Council reforms as the party saw more hurdles for India's permanent membership bid.

"The government is misleading. It is nobody's victory. We have a concern that why we've even lost the support of P5 countries," party's senior spokesman Anand Sharma told reporters.

While the party is "disappointed over the ambivalent position" of the US, China is staunchly opposed to India getting permanent membership of the UN body with veto powers, he said.

Besides, he said that Russia, which was few years back was backing India strongly, has "reversed" its position.

Insisting that there was "misplaced euphoria" in the Modi dispensation over the issue, he said that the General Assembly decision should be seen in the proper perspective.

Sharma's remarks came a day after India's top diplomat hailed as "path-breaking" decision by the UN General Assembly to advance efforts for UN Security Council reforms.

India's Permanent Representative to the UN Asoke Mukerji said that countries should now negotiate on the text on the table and give their national positions on the issue.

"We have got something after 23 years which is a document on the table. From now it is going to be much more in terms of what they are used to doing at the UN which is to negotiate with a text in front of us," he had said in New York yesterday.

The 193-member General Assembly adopted by consensus two days back a text that sets the stage for negotiations on the long-pending issue of UNSC reforms.

India has been a leading voice in the UN for Security Council reforms and wants a permanent seat in an expanded body.
