Students from IIM Bangalore made their annual statement against corruption in a candlelight march around their campus. The event paid homage to the late Manjunath Shanmugam, alumnus of IIM Lucknow and employee of Indian Oil Corporation, who was killed when he raised his voice to fight oil malpractices in his territory. He was murdered on 19 November 2005 by a petrol pump owner and his accomplices. On the occasion of his fifth death anniversary the entire student community of IIM Bangalore appeared in large numbers to pay their respects and to take a stand for integrity and against corruption.
The march culminated in a speech by second year PGP student Nithyanand Siddharth who talked about Shanmugam, his life, and the Manjunath Shanmugam Integrity Award, after which a moment of silence was observed. All students then took a pledge to adhere to the highest levels of integrity throughout their lives. They promised to ‘strive for high standards of service and ethical behaviour that are conducive to the development of the economy and the eradication of poverty.’
