10-ft python carcass found in Agra sanctuary: wildlife NGO

A Delhi-based wildlife body today claimed that it has found the burnt carcass of a 10-ft python and rescued a fawn and a piglet after a fire had recently ravaged Soor Sarovar Bird Sanctuary in Agra.
"A large area of Soor Sarovar Bird Sanctuary in Agra was ravaged by a forest fire. Amidst hundreds of birds, nests, reptiles and small mammals that would have perished in a fire like this, the burnt carcass of a large 10-ft python was found.
"A baby hog deer (fawn) and a baby wild boar (piglet) was rescued by us when the news of the forest fire reached them," a Wildlife SoS said in a statement.

In the aftermath of the horrific fire in the sanctuary earlier this week, several birds, reptiles and animals were killed and injured and several hectares of forest were damaged, it said.
The fire, the body said, was reportedly caused by a spark in high-voltage electricity wires that pass through the sanctuary, to provide electricity to the neighbouring villages.
Among the many animals that were severely affected were a hog deer fawn and a wild boar piglet found orphaned.

"It is suspected that the animals' parents perished in the fire leaving the babies to fend for themselves. The piglet had injured its fore limb and the fawn was weak from dehydration," it said.

The Indian Hog Deer (Axis porcinus) is an endangered deer species found in South and Southeast Asia.
"We are relieved that the forest fire is now extinguished and the Agra Bear Rescue Facility was spared during this devastating forest fire, but it saddens us to learn that the surrounding area and the residing wildlife were severely affected," said Kartick Satyanarayan, co-founder of Wildlife SOS.
