1000 tourists stranded due to landslides in China evacuated

The tourists were stranded after a massive landslide hit State Highway 209 near the Shennongjia forestry resort in Hubei province on Monday, an official statement said.

Another landslide hit the same location yesterday afternoon, cutting traffic on a highway that runs from Hohhot, capital of north China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region, to Beihai in the southern Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, it said.

No casualties have been reported.

Most of the tourists took shelter at the Shennongjia forestry resort and were given food and water, while workers cleared the rubble and fixed the road.

Road work was completed early today and all the tourists were evacuated, state-run news agency Xinhua reported.

Shennongjia, a major tourist attraction, is famous for being a supposed home of 'Yeren', an elusive bigfoot-like creature. PTI KJV
