Replying to a question in the Assembly yesterday, state Industries and Commerce Minister Madan Mohan Mittal said that a total of 193 units had been reported closed during April 2007 till July 15, 2015.
As much as 168 units in Mandi Gobindgarh, nine each in Bathinda and Hoshiarpur, one each in Muktsar and Faridkot and five in Sangrur, were closed, Mittal informed the House.
The reasons for the closure of these units are overall economic recession, withdrawal of freight equalization scheme by central government in 1992 and providing special package to neighbouring states of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Jammu and Kashmir, the Minister pointed out.
The Minister further informed that Punjab Bureau of Investment Promotion has granted approval to 177 projects with project cost of Rs 11,561 crore with 93,014 jobs since December, 2013.
