Out of the total employed persons, about 56.24 lakh persons were employed in the urban area and 0.82 lakh in rural area. The number of male were 51.66 lakh and female were 5.40 lakh, according to the 68th Round of National Sample Survey (2011-12),prepared by Directorate of Economics & Statistics on employment and unemployment situation in Delhi,
"Major source of earnings of about 22.19 lakh households (52.68% of the total) was from regular wage / salary. Whereas, source of earning of about 15-46 lakh households (36.70%) was from self-employment," the survey stated.
"Out of 2.66 lakh unemployed persons, about 2.50 lakh (93.84%) were in the category of 15-29 years and remaining persons were in other age groups.
"Of the numbers of unemployed persons, about 0.07 lakh (3% of the total) were illiterate. About 0.15 lakh were literate but below primary level, around 0.89 lakh were primary, middle and secondary pass and 1.56 lakh were higher secondary and above," survey also stated.
The unemployment rate in the urban area of the national capital is 40 per thousand persons in labour force as compared to 34 per thousand in urban area at the national level and 42 in Haryana, 41 in Uttar Pradesh, 40 in Himachal Pradesh, 70 in J&K, 64 in Chandigarh and 43 per thousand in the urban area of Andhra Pradesh.
