Silas from Nakuru, Kenya, had come to Kovai Medical Centre and Hospital (KMCH) with his 62 year old mother, Lucy Karanja two weeks ago.
Luch, who had already undergone the replacement of right side heart valve in USA a couple of years ago, was referred to the Electro Physiology Department. Consultant Dr M Lawrence Jesuraj evaluated her and found she was suffering from a very slow heart rate--lesser than 35 beats /minute.
Though implantation of a permanent Pace Maker was relatively common and carried out by fixing two wires inside the heart, Lucy had a unique problem of already having an artificial valve (due to her earlier surgery) in the area where the pacing wires to be fixed, Jesuraj said.
Doctors then fixed the two chamber pace maker with one wire in the right atrium (Upper chamber of the heart) and other through the vein of the heart in a four hour procedure.
