Two students from poor families from a Delhi-based NGO 'Deepalaya' have been selected for the US governmemt-sponsored community college initiative programme.
Ritu Kumari and Satvinderjeet Kaur are part of 37 students selected by the Community College initiative programme sponsored by the United States, A J Philip, President of Deepalaya, told reporters here today.
These students did their schooling from Deepalaya, a charity operational since 1979 running schools in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. It has sent a total of 17 students to the US in the past four years.
"The students who went abroad in the past became role models for these two students and I hope that the number of students to get international experience will increase every year," Philip said.
During the programme, students receive training in academic English, information technology, management studies, media, applied engineering, business, agriculture and hotel management. After completion of the one-year programme, the students are awarded scholarships.
"The students are selected for this programme by scrutiny which includes essay writing and other exams", said Sikha Paul, principal of the Deepalaya School in Kalkaji Extension.
The two students selected for the scholarships shared their joy during a press conference here.
"I am proud to be a part of this programme and I would like to be a teacher in future after finishing this course and would explore all oppurtunities which come in my way", said Ritu Kumari. She will be doing Early Childhood education in Bunker Community College, Boston.
Satvinderjeet Kaur will be doing her studies in Information Technology in Wiscosin. "I know I will do it and make my country proud", she said.
