The clashes took place between Muslim Brotherhood supporters and residents of the Matariya district, according to the Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population.
Violent clashes erupted when security forces tried to disperse a Muslim Brotherhood supporters' protest by firing tear gas and arresting several demonstrators, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.
At the same time, Matariya residents clashed with the protesters in an attempt to disperse the march that started from outside Nour Mohamady Mosque after the Friday prayer.
The day witnessed a number of marches by pro-Muslim Brotherhood supporters in Cairo as well as in other Egyptian cities.
The protests were organised against the fuel price hike and Israeli offensive in Gaza.
