2 police inspectors suspended for dereliction of duty
Press Trust of India Ahmedabad City Commissioner of Police (CP) Shivanand Jha today ordered suspension of two police inspectors for alleged dereliction of duty and failing to curb gambling, after clashes between locals and supporters of illegal gambling den operators in the Idgah area yesterday night.
Fed up by gambling activity in the Idgah Chowky area of Madhavpura, angry locals allegedly raided a gambling den late yesterday night and torched more than 25 vehicles parked there.
During the clashes, one Abdul Karim Shaikh (62) sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the civil hospital, where he died today, the Madhavpura police said.
So far, 11 people involved in the clashes have been arrested by the Madhavpura police.
Locals alleged that the gambling den ran despite informing the police several times.
"This gambling den made our lives miserable, since drunkards too throng here in large numbers and harass our women. We made numerous representations to the Madhavpura police, but it always turned a blind eye," an angry local said after learning about Shaikh's death.
Madhavpura police inspector F K Jogal was on leave when the incident took place yesterday.
Ranip police inspector C B Patel was given additional charge of Madhavpura yesterday, Joint Commissioner of Police (JCP) Zone-1 Manoj Agrawal said.
"We have suspended both police inspectors for not doing their duty," Agrawal said.
