"The fire was first spotted at around 11.20 PM and it gradually spread to a large section of Deen Bazaar market gutting around 20 shops. Six shops selling fire crackers were also completely gutted," said Ashis Roy, inspector in-charge, Kotwali police station, Jalpaiguri.
Six fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the flames.
"The fire brigade personnel are still working to bring the blaze under control. Once that is done, we will then investigate the cause behind the blaze," Roy said adding, the damage would also be assessed once the flames are doused.
