The precious metal was seized from the trio near Nagpur railway station yesterday, they said.
Interestingly, the three accused had managed to escape detection at the Central Excise and Customs checks at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport, where they had arrived on a flight from Sharjah.
However, acting on a tip-off, Crime Branch nabbed Shaikh Jilani Abdul Kadar (38), a Mumbai resident, and Ranwala Mohd Hussain Yusuf Ali (46) and Ruksana Mohd Hussain Ali Rangwala (39), both from Thane, near the railway station where they were headed to catch a Mumbai-bound train.
A preliminary search after the Crime Branch team had nabbed the trio did not yield the smuggled item and it was only upon a thorough physical search using a metal detector that the metal was traced in the body cavity.
In all, 12 gold biscuits worth about Rs 37.80 lakh were recovered from them, police said, adding that they have also seized the passports of the three accused.
