3 prisoners to walk free, 428 to get remission in sentence

Three prisoners lodged in jails of Himachal Pradesh would walk free while the sentences for 428 others would be remitted on the eve of Independence Day, an official said today.
Of the 813 prison inmates in the state, 431 were found to be eligible for remission in sentence. Their sentences will be remitted for 15 days to three months depending on their duration, an official spokesman said.
Remission in sentence has been announced for 145 inmates of Kanda jail, 128 of Nahan jail, 65 of Dharamsala jail, 49 of Bilaspur jail, 13 of Chamba jail and nine of Mandi jail, said the spokesman.

As per rules, a maximum of three-month remission can be awarded to those sentenced to life imprisonment or more than 10 years, two months to those sentenced to five to 10 years, 45 days for those sentenced to three to five years, 30 days for those sentenced to one to three years and 15 days for those sentenced to less than one year.
