5% dip in crime cases in 2018 against 2017 figures: T'gana DGP

The number of criminal cases registered between January and November, 30 this year in Telangana came down to 1,02,307 from 1,07,428 in the same period in 2017, a reduction of five per cent, state Director General of Police (DGP) M Mahendar Reddy said on Sunday.

There was a reduction in murder cases by four per cent, property crimes by eight per cent, chain-snatching incidents by 43 per cent, crimes against women by seven per cent, cyber offences by three per cent and white-collar offences by two per cent, he informed.

However, there was an increase in cases of murders for gain and culpable homicide by five per cent each, rioting by 17 per cent, kidnapping by 19 per cent and rape by 11 per cent, the DGP said.

Crimes against members of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities had also seen a rise of three per cent, he added.

"As many as 1,02,307 cases were reported up to November 30, 2018 as against 1,07,428 cases registered during the same period last year. There is a decline of five per cent in crime cases," he told reporters here.

In 2018, as many as 6,019 children were rescued and of them, 3,390 were handed over to their parents, while 2,629 were sent to rescue homes, the DGP said.

Reddy added that the goals for 2019 included improving service delivery, combating existing and emerging crimes, organisation building and transformation, road safety and traffic management.

Technology-related initiatives implemented in the Hyderabad commissionerate would be replicated across all commissionerates and districts in the state with a focus on citizen-friendly policing, he said.

"Fifteen lakh CCTV cameras, comprising 10 lakh in GHMC (Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation) limits and another five lakh across the districts, would be installed under community partnership in the next three years," Reddy said.
