80 MRUs to be set up during 12th five-yr-plan: govt

Stressing the need for more research work in medical colleges, the Centre today said it has approved establishment of 80 multi-disciplinary research units (MRUs) in state government medical colleges in the 12th five year plan.
"The facilities for research in medical colleges need to be strengthened. The Department of Health Research initiated a scheme titled Establishment of Multi-disciplinary Research Units in Medical Colleges across the country to build up infrastructure facilities for conducting research.
"This scheme has been approved to establish 80 Multi-disciplinary Research Units in state government medical colleges during 12th plan period," Minister of State (Health and FW), Shripad Yesso Naik said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.

He added that so far 52 MRUs have been sanctioned across the country.
He said the objectives of the scheme is to encourage and strengthen an environment of research in medical colleges apart from bridging the gap in the infrastructure which inhibits health research in the medical colleges by assisting them to establish multidisciplinary research facilities.
Its objective is also to ensure the geographical spread of health research infrastructure and to improve the overall health status of the population by creating evidence-based application of diagnostic procedures and methods.
The Department of Health Research has taken steps to augment the research infrastructure and to promote quality research papers as per the above scheme titled Establishment of MRUs.
