Action needed to improve standard of legal education: Judge

Chief Justice of Kerala High Court Justice Ashok Bhushan today called for a concerted action by the bar, bench and law teachers to improve the standard of legal education.
Inaugurating a day-long national seminar on "Current issues before the legal profession and judiciary" here, Justice Bhushan said, "We have to equip ourselves better so that we will not only keep pace with the current developments but also meet the demands of the future."
Legal education was a multi-disciplined and multi-purpose education which could develop the human resources and idealism needed to strengthen the legal system, he said.
"An advocate's duty is as important as that of a judge. Advocates have a larger responsibility towards the society. An advocate is under an obligation to uphold the rule of law and ensure that the public justice system is enabled to function at its full potential," he said.

The problems of our justice delivery system were many but not insurmountable. Judiciaries of other countries are also facing similar problems but the difference was in implementing solutions to them, he said.
Each wing of governance must discharge its duties and fulfil its obligations towards the other and only then we can achieve the desired results in the dispensation of justice to the people of our country, he said.
Former Advocate General Raju Ramachandran, former Assistant Solicitor General L Nageswara Rao, senior advocates M N Krishnamani and Rajiv Dutta took part in the deliberations.
Contemporary issues such as "Practical roadblocks in promoting mediation, Supreme Court guidelines giving new dimensions to section 498A of IPC and Media and Law with reference to bail or no bail" were discussed in three sessions during the seminar.
