Aditya Mittal, with a tally of 5.5 points, grabbed the lead at the end of the sixth round today of the IIFL Wealth Mumbai International Junior Chess Tournament here today.
In a closely contested game, Mittal overcame the challenge from B Sriram to pick up the full point.
Both Mittal and Sriram were engaged in a tense battle initially, before the former managed to snatch a slight one piece advantage in the middle game. Mittal capitalised on that advantage and went on to checkmate his rival on the 37th move.
Meanwhile, Grandmaster Swapnill S Dhopade and Himal Gusain emerged joint leaders with 6.5 points each after the seventh round of the International Open event, held concurrently.
On the top board, Dhopade beat overnight leader Stany GA, while Gusain defeated Vinay Kumar Matta on the second board. Stany, despite the loss, remained in the hunt as he has 6 points, half a point shy of the leaders.

Deep Sengupta will play his maiden world cup thanks to some fighting chess he produced here.
