Questioning the leadership of the Indian Army's 3 Corps in wake of the deadly ambush in Manipur, Rajya Sabha MP and member of the Standing Committee on Defence Rajeev Chandrasekhar today said the force needs to get its act together in the Northeast.
"My personal view is that the army and security forces in the Northeast have got sloppy and in my opinion are not alert to the very rapidly changing situation on the ground which is driven by divisions in the insurgent movements," Chandrasekhar said speaking to reporters here.
He said it was his opinion that 18 men to be "killed like that in a convoy is a senseless sacrifice by the army".
"I believe it points to better precaution not having been taken, intelligence failure possibly. Army generally needs to get its act together in the Northeast," he said.
18 men of 6 Dogra Regiment were killed and 11 injured when an insurgent group ambushed their patrol in Chandel district of Manipur on Thursday.
Chandrasekhar said 18 men walking into an ambush like that is an indication that "leadership of 3 Corps in Dimapur needs to get its act together".
He said the incident points to "issues" with the leadership of the Army in that region.
"They have to be alert. They have to understand what is going on the ground and protect their men from being cannon fodder like this. This is a wrong signal that Army is casual about its preparedness," he said.
