Assam Rifles orders probe into Tehelka expose
Press Trust of India Shillong The Assam Rifles, the oldest para-military force in the country, today ordered a departmental inquiry into the alleged cash-for-contract scam exposed in a sting operation by a Delhi-based magazine.
"We have initiated a departmental inquiry into the matter which is being conducted through the vigilance wing of the force," Assam Riffles spokesperson Lt Col Sunil Rawat said here.
A former jawan-turned-contractor C K Matthew, who reportedly initiated the sting operation against Assam Rifles officers and others, was called for deposition of the original footages for necessary actions, he said.
Admitting that the matter was a serious one, Assam Rifles spokesperson said the departmental inquiry would get to the very cause and roots of the problem which has tarnished the image of the force.
The 15-minute-long video codenamed 'Operation Hilltop' released by Tehelka magazine last evening showed 13 persons from various posts of the Assam Rifles allegedly taking bribe from an approved contractor.
