Attempts to glorify Mahatma Gandhi's assasin Nathuram Godse came under sharp attack in Rajya Sabha today by a Congress member, who demanded immediate steps to stop veneration of such a militant.
Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Hussain Dalwai (Cong) said it is condemnable that in the recent past there have been steps to glorify Godse, "the killer of Rashtrapita" who taught non-violence to the world.
He said there were instances to install Godse's statues, organise rallies and observe October 2, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi as "shaurya divas" in favour of Godse, which was unfortunate.
"Murderers have never been worshipped," he said, adding that attempts were being made to propagate his ideology too.
"I have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to stop this. Even Nobel laureate Amartya Sen has expressed concern," he said and wanted to know what steps the governmet has initiated to stop this.
He said he had received no reply to his letter to the Prime Minister.
Amid a number of opposition members associating with the demand, Tarun Vijay (BJP) said Mahatma Gandhi was revered and not Godse. He made some more remarks but could not be heard in the din due to vociferous protests by opposition members on the issue.
