Arumugam was killed on the spot while some others sustained injuries, police said.
The car rammed into a couple of autos parked on Cathedral Road even as some of the drivers were sleeping in them.
The incident occurred early this morning and one person has been detained in connection with the incident, police said.
He was suspected to be under the influence of alcohol and a probe was on, they added.
In July, a woman driver of a luxury car was arrested for allegedly fatally knocking down a carpenter on the busy Rajiv Gandhi Salai.
