Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal announced today that nearly Rs 2.5 crore will be given to city administration for the upgradation of five government schools to smart schools during the current financial year.
Bansal, who is also the MP from Chandigarh, will provide from his Member of Parliament Local Area Development (MPLADS) funds to the Union Territory administration.
Of these, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Modern Housing Complex, Manimajra and Government Model High School, Sector-28 D have already been allocated Rs 86 lakh for the upgradation.
Now, three more schools in Sectors 54, 35 and 16 would be added to this list with an additional allocation of nearly Rs 1.5 crore.
He announced this while inaugurating the Government High School in Sector 50 here today, which is Chandigarh's second smart school.
The school has been built at an estimated cost of Rs 6 crore in an area of 4.23 acres. The school has 27 classrooms and four laboratories besides all other facilities.
Speaking on the occasion, Bansal underlined the fact that the introduction of the smart school concept in government schools would help eliminate the discrimination between the rich and the poor students as, hitherto, only the rich students had access to this concept.
The Minister further announced that he has also earmarked funds from MPLAD for providing water purifiers in all the 200 existing government schools and 16 upcoming schools to ensure that the students get clean drinking water.
He also emphasised upon the need for water conservation and called upon the teachers to inculcate the habit of water conservation amongst the students.
