As part of efforts to strengthen the overall security framework at airports amid rising threat perception for the aviation sector, AAI is putting in such access control systems at the airports.
Sources said the Biometric Access Control System (BACS) are to be installed at around 48 airports, including those operated by joint ventures.
AAI manages 125 airports, including 11 international and 81 domestic aerodromes. Five airports -- at Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Nagpur -- are run by joint ventures.
They spoke on the sidelines of SITA's 2016 Aviation ICT Forum here.
BECIL was awarded the contract after competitive bidding process.
Sources said joint venture airports are also in the final phase of awarding contracts for BACS.
The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security issues passes to those working at airports and once the biometric access control system is in place, then the employees would also be provided smart cards.
Set up in 1995, BECIL provides project consultancy services and turnkey solutions encompassing the entire gamut of radio and television broadcast engineering. It also offers supply of specialised communication, monitoring, security and surveillance systems to defence, police department and various para-military forces, among others.
