Considered the reigning king of Bhangra, Punjabi superstar Diljit Dosanjh says being deeply connected to his spiritual side has played a key role in his success as music is ultimately the "sound of god".
Dosanjh, who has delivered chartbusters like 'Patiala Peg' and most recently '5 Taara', performed live in the city at the Red FM SWAG Fest, managing to keep the audience mesmerised despite rain and hailstorm.
The 32-year-old has not just made a name in music but has also delivered some of the biggest hits in the history of Punjabi cinema with 'Jatt and Juliet' and 'Sardaarji' being the most notable in terms of box office success.
The singer-actor is set to make his Bollywood debut opposite Kareena Kapoor in 'Udta Punjab'.
"Definitely being spiritual helps me create good music because music is ultimately the sound of the god. The universe itself was created by the sound waves which that almighty created. So music and spirituality go together. Everything is interconnected," Dosanjh told PTI in a telephonic interaction.
The Ludhiana-based performer is for now gearing up for the release of his Punjabi film 'Ambarsariya', which sees him playing an insurance agent on a mysterious mission.
"It's a thriller comedy and I am doing such a role for the first time. I have done some rom-coms in the past, then I did a serious film like 'Punjab 1984', this one is a thriller comedy," Dosanjh said.
Dosanjh said the Bollywood opportunity came knocking because of the recognition he got in the Punjabi entertainment industry, which will always be his priority.
Much loved for the memorable comic roles in 'Jatt and
Juliet' and 'Sardaar ji', which is incidentally the second highest-grossing Punjabi film of all time, Dosanjh says it has never been a conscious decision to do only light-hearted characters and he goes purely by instincts in picking his assignments.
"I don't feel typecast because of these roles because the one film of mine that got a National Award was 'Punjab 1984' and after doing that, I can say that I am capable of doing any kind of role. I don't make a conscious decision that I would only do a particular type of movie, I take up whatever character I like in a script," he said.
'Punjab 1984', a 2014 film, presented Dosanjh in a never-seen-before role of a brooding youngster scarred by the insurgency and political upheaval that rocked Punjab in the '80s. The film bagged the National Award for the best Punjabi film that year.
Asked about his dream role, Dosanjh said he would love to play a pirate similar to what Johnny Depp did in the blockbuster 'Pirates of the Caribbean' series.
"I absolutely love the role that Johnny Depp played in the Pirates of the Caribbean. I thought it was a very good character and I would like to play a character like that if somebody can create it for me," he said.
