In line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's announcement during his visit to Nepal, the Bharat-Nepal Shiksha Maitri Karyakram, a course for Nepalese students was launched at Calcutta University campus here today.
As per the programme, three groups comprising 20 Nepalese students each will pursue the month-long course and tour.
"This is a kind of India study tour where these students, who have come to Calcutta university (CU) will be given a thorough idea about India's history, geography, politics, diplomacy," said Shantanu Chakraborti, one of the main coordinating professors of the project in CU.
The programme was lauched in the presence of Governor K N Tripathi, state education Minister Partha Chatterjee and Nepal Consul General in Kolkata.
According to CU Vice-Chancellor Suranjan Das, this programme will provide opportunities to Nepalese students to better understand India, which in turn will help strengthen relations between India and Nepal.
The Embassy announced that the first batch of students under the Bharat-Nepal Maitri Shiksha Karyakram left for India on Saturday.
The batch of 20 Nepalese students, who arrived here in Kolkata yesterday, will stay in the city till November 25.
Students will also undertake trips to various places of historical and cultural importance in and around Kolkata.
