Opposition BJP today criticised Congress for fielding Lok Sabha MP from Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh Sanjay Sinh as its Rajya Sabha candidate from Assam and alleged that the ruling party never did any good for the state.
"Sanjay Sinh is a criminal. By nominating him, Congress party has shown that it is not for the indigenous people of Assam but for the outsiders and foreigners," Assam BJP President Sarbananda Sonowal told reporters here.
The party had earlier also showed its actual character by nominating Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for many consecutive terms with a temporary address in Assam, he added.
The Prime Minister is an MP for over two decades. If we see his contribution to the state, then it is nothing, he claimed.
He also criticised Congress' decision to put its ally Bodoland Peoples Front's candidate Biswajit Daimary as the third preference, making his fate uncertain.
Congress has made its state unit President Bhubaneswar Kalita as the first choice for the election of three seats of Rajya Sabha from Assam, followed by Sinh.
The BJP leader also condemned Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi's reaction yesterday when a journalist asked him if he was supporting Sinh in return of a Lok Sabha ticket for his son Gaurav Gogoi.
"The CM insulted media persons. It is a serious matter and a violation of freedom of speech and freedom of press. Asking any question is the fundamental right of a journalist," Sonowal said.
Press is the fourth pillar of democracy and so Gogoi's reaction is an attack on democracy, he added.
BJP, along with Asom Gana Parishad and All India United Democratic Front, is supporting the candidature of senior journalist Haidar Hussain for the Rajya Sabha election.
"Our party is always for indigenous people of Assam. That is why, we are supporting Hussain, who is an indigenous Muslim from the state," Sonowal said.
On the recent incidents of violence across the state by banned NDFB(S) terrorists, he said the overall law and order situation in the state is very bad.
Yesterday, Additional Superintendent of Police of Sonitpur district Gulzar Hussain and a police informer were killed, while five policemen were seriously injured in an ambush by the anti-talk faction of NDFB at Dhekiajuli.
