BJP today held the Delhi government responsible for the "appalling" condition of the Yamuna in the capital, alleging that funds worth crores have been siphoned off in the name of various schemes to clean the river.
"The Congress-led Delhi government is responsible for the appalling condition of Yamuna's stretch in Delhi. More than Rs 3,000 crore have gone down the drain, thanks to the government's corruption," Delhi BJP president Vijay Goel said.
Addressing a press conference, Goel presented a vision document listing initiatives required to improve the condition of the river. "Yamuna's 48-km stretch in Delhi, out of which the 22-km is the worst affected. 45 per cent of the city's sewerage is discharged into the river without any treatment," he said.
Najafgarh releases 61 per cent of the effluent discharge, Shahdara drains 17 per cent, Delhi Gate drains six per cent, Barapullah nullah 2.2 per cent and Tughlaqabad 2.2 per cent, the document said.
Goel also announced that tomorrow some of his party workers will welcome the crowd marching from Vrindavan for better Yamuna, at Badarpur border and will "join their protest at the Jantar Mantar" on March 11.
"Our party workers will welcome the marching crowd at the Badarpur border but it will not be in political capacity. We are with anyone fighting for a better Yamuna and we'll stand by them as citizens of this country," he said.
The Delhi BJP president also suggested that "chapters on Yamuna be made part of the schools and colleges curriculum."
Suggesting measures to improve the river's condition, Goel said if BJP's voted back to power, they will take the issue with due seriousness.
