Islamic banking and the working of Equal Opportunity Commission (EOC) figured during the talks between British High Commissioner James David Bevan and Minority Affairs Minister K Rahman Khan here today.
Bevan called on Khan, who shared with him various schemes and programmes of his Ministry and informed him about the five notified minority communities in India, a government release said.
While Islamic banking is in operation in the UK, its introduction in India remains a contentious subject. Similarly, the setting up of an EOC in India got embroiled in the controversies surrounding its mandate and location.
During the courtesy call, Bevan also informed Khan that the British Minister for Communities will be visiting India in May.
Khan desired to understand the working of the EOC and Islamic banking in the United Kingdom, the release said.
The minister told Bevan that the government is making efforts to bring minorities to the level of national average of development and mentioned about schemes including the Prime Minister's 15-point programme in this regard.
Khan told Bevan that the recent visit of British Premier David Cameron to India has further strengthened the ties between the two countries, the release said.
