The seized heroin is worth about Rs 90 crore in the international market, said Anil Paliwal, Inspector General, BSF, Punjab Frontier.
N K Misra, DIG, BSF, said that besides the heroin seizure, one pistol, 1 pistol magazine and 10 rounds of ammunition were also seized.
Acting on a tip off, the troops and Counter Intelligence Staff, Punjab Police, Amritsar laid an ambush in the area of Border Out Post DBN Road on the intervening night of March 22-23, he said.
Immediately, BSF troops challenged them but they did not pay any heed and tried to retrieve the pipe.
"They also fired at our troops. To stop their misadventure and sensing danger to their life, our troops opened fire in self defence. However, smugglers managed to escape taking cover of darkness," he said.
However, blood trail of the injured smugglers was seen leading towards Pakistan territory, he said.
More than 79.8 kg of heroine has been seized this year at the international border in Punjab, Paliwal said.
