Frustrated with the Maoists, villagers from two villages in Chhattisgarh's Sukma district have decided not to support Naxal activities and extend help to development works in their area, police said today.
"Around 250 people from Chikpal and Marjum villages which fall under Tongpal police station limits had yesterday reached the police station and informed police about their decision," Deputy Inspector General of Police (South Bastar range) Sundarraj P told PTI.
The development is being seen as a big success by Bastar police which has been running community policing and civic action programmes along with the local administration in the region to garner public support against Maoists.
"The villagers have assured to block every kind of assistance that was being given to Maoists by them in the past and stay away from Naxal ideology and violence," the DIG said.
Among the 250 villagers who had reached the police station, there was no listed Naxal cadre. However, these villagers had been supporting Naxals by providing food, shelter and other logistic support either by will or force, he said.
Community policing programme being run by police and administration has started yielding fruitful results as tribals from several villages of the region have expressed their desire not to support Naxals so that development could take place in their locality, the DIG said.
A large number of women, were among the villagers who had reached Tongpal yesterday, which is around 16 kms from their villages, on foot.
"The Maoist have obstructed development activities in our villages denying basic amenities like roads, schools, power supply and clean drinking water," a villager, who did not wished to be named, said.
"Now we have decided not to allow Naxal activities anymore in our villages as we want development and peace and not the violence," he said.
The Darbha Division of the outlawed CPI (Maoist) looks after the Naxal activities in the two villages which lie on the tri-junction of Bastar, Sukma and Dantewada districts, around 400 kms away from here.
